UK Starmer Denounces Trump’s Greenland Takeover Remarks
Starmer’s intervention followed comments from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who urged Trump to stop making “threats” toward Denmark, which governs the autonomous Arctic territory.
Speaking to media political editor Beth Rigby on Monday, Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s backing of Copenhagen and underscored Denmark’s status within Europe and NATO.
“Denmark is a close European ally, a close NATO ally. And the future therefore has to be for Greenland, for the Kingdom of Denmark, and only for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark,” Starmer said.
He added: “I stand with her. She’s right about the future of Greenland,” signaling full support for Frederiksen’s position.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper echoed that stance in the House of Commons, stressing that London would continue close security cooperation with Denmark. “The future of Greenland is a matter for the Greenlanders and Danes, and no one else,” she said.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic Arctic location makes it vital to US national security. “We do need Greenland, absolutely,” he told The Atlantic in an interview published Sunday, pointing to growing naval activity by Russia and China.
The president has previously floated controversial ideas including annexing Canada and reasserting US control over the Panama Canal.
His renewed focus on Greenland came shortly after the US invaded Venezuela and abducted its president, Nicolas Maduro, along with his wife, Cilia Flores, accusing them of drug trafficking. That military action drew condemnation from the Venezuelan government as well as Russia and China.
